Student Expectations Have Changed Forever

Students entering higher education today are digital natives. They’ve grown up surrounded by smartphones, tablets, and interactive touchscreens. Their expectations for technology on campus are sky-high.

From “Can I?” to “Why Can’t I?”

One of the most striking comments from the panel was: “There’s been a shift from students asking, ‘Can I do this?’ to, ‘Why can’t I do this?’”

Students expect to interact with screens, access collaborative tools, and switch seamlessly between physical and digital environments. If they can do it at home or on their phone, they expect to do it at university.

Spaces That Support Collaboration

The demand isn’t just for technology but also for spaces that enable it. Students increasingly ask for small meeting pods, hybrid-friendly rooms, and flexible study environments.

Universities are responding by designing a variety of spaces — from quiet zones to open collaboration hubs — that reflect the diverse ways students learn.

Meeting the Standard

Technology that once felt advanced is now simply baseline. To meet expectations, universities must keep systems reliable, simple, and consistent across campuses.

Students are no longer impressed by the presence of technology. They take it for granted. What matters now is how well it supports their learning journey.
