Embracing diversity and inclusion in schools

This month we are celebrating diversity and inclusion at Clevertouch Technologies.

At the start of the school year, the curriculum was updated to promote more LGBTQ+ awareness as part of relationships and sex education. Children from a BAME background make up approximately 34% of students. There are over 1,200 special education schools in the UK. The makeup of the average child in Britain is more diverse than ever before.

Since 2010, it’s been illegal in the UK for schools to treat a ‘pupil or prospective pupil.. less favourably because of:

  • Age
  • Disability
  • Gender reassignment
  • Marriage and civil partnership
  • Pregnancy and maternity
  • Race
  • Religion or belief, including lack of belief
  • Sex
  • Sexual orientation”

Schools are places where children should feel safe, protected and comfortable. Rather than seeing diversity and inclusion as a box-ticking exercise, schools should be seeing it as something to embrace. This June, we hope students are encouraged to learn about their differences and their similarities. When children feel comfortable and safe, they are more likely to be able to concentrate on learning and developing new skills. When children feel sure of themselves, they can share their opinions, collaborate on ideas, and be more open-minded.

Clevertouch Technologies have a number of activities we are working on this month to celebrate Diversity and Inclusion. For schools, we’ve developed a range of digital posters that you can display on your screens around school and in classrooms. You can download the posters here.

Check back throughout June to read more from our colleagues on Diversity and Inclusion.
